Book Review 1 from one of our interns!

My name is Saray Hernández Cisneros, an International student from Puebla Mexico; I am currently a Junior at Principia College with a double major in Global Studies ( concentration in Social Justice) and Sociology & Anthropology. And triple minoring in Women's and Gender Studies, Education and Digital Media and Journalism. I am passionate about topics related to social justice such as racial segregation,  children's education and women's rights. I love to write, research and propose community-driven solutions that hopefully will help solve these important social issues. This internship based on grant writing will give me hands-on experience with drafting grant narratives, literature reviews, and data-informed rationale for proposals for Real Health Inc. Additionally, in this internship I will refine and gain skills such as : Grant Writing, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving and Researching. Which will help me for future professional goals such as going to graduate school and working in the Non-profit sector.

"
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book in story form, which made it both engaging and easy to follow. The author’s experiences with cultural shock stood out to me, adding a unique and meaningful layer to the narrative. The level of detail was impressive—it truly made me feel as though I was experiencing the events alongside the author, which is one of the book’s greatest strengths......I was especially drawn to the author’s reflections on cultural shock as an Indian American traveling to India. As someone with a strong interest in learning about different cultures, I would have loved to see even more of these moments highlighted in the book.
Overall, I appreciated the use of the first-person perspective, which made the story feel personal and immersive—though I recognize this is a matter of preference. The book was enjoyable and insightful, and I commend the author for sharing such detailed, reflective experiences. With a bit more structure and character clarity, I believe it would be even more accessible to readers. I would have loved for it to be longer."

Why is it important to read and distribute this book?

"Padma Sherni’s Dil Pickle Dilemma is a refreshing and engaging coming-of-age journey that feels both deeply personal and widely relatable. Through a series of candid, often humorous reflections, the book explores the complexities of growing up, navigating family dynamics, and figuring out how to balance cultural expectations with personal identity.

What makes this book truly stand out is its honesty. The stories are raw and unfiltered, offering a glimpse into the real, sometimes messy parts of life that many people experience but few talk about so openly. The author’s ability to find humor in dating mishaps and life’s awkward moments makes the book not only insightful but also genuinely fun to read.

The cultural layers add depth, especially the exploration of what it means to grow up Indian American while moving through different social spaces at various pivotal points throughout her life. The author handles these cultural contrasts with grace and humor, making the reader feel both included and invited to reflect on their own identity, whatever that may be.

Overall, this is a warm, witty, and thought-provoking read that will resonate with a wide audience—Whether you share the author’s cultural background or simply appreciate a good story about figuring life out, readers will find Padma Sherni’s life dilemmas and stories easy to love and deeply relatable."

"I highly recommend this novel.  I would give it 5 out of 5 stars as a reader.  This story is broken down in sections following the character, Padma Sherni.  Throughout each section, messages talked about are relayed through, coming of age experiences, family interactions, friendship, touching on cultural identity, sexuality, race and age.  This book is great for preteens to college aged students, as well as parents.  This book encourages self-acceptance, curiosity and growth.  Padma Sherni’s Dil Pickle Dilemma, “Dil means: with heart” leaves readers with a sense of nourishment for their own culture and identity. "
