Problem Statement: Approximately 4.5 million dollars in savings from unnecessary emergency room use in the state of Delaware could otherwise be spent towards health promotion and disease prevention in early education and care settings, especially pertaining to 25% of Head start families experiencing childhood obesity. Nutritional health literacy scores had lower among Hispanic Head Start parents even with Spanish assessment and Black parents had lower functional health literacy, health seeking behavior (Roy, 2018)
Project Description: The goal of the program is to improve parent education and positive child health outcomes for weight management problems across twelve months. We will support the improvement of preschool parents’ nutritional health literacy levels and child Body Mass Index as a function of level of participation in parent education about nutrition/weight management information with printed materials, health coaching, and technology access (cell phones app, text messages, laptop zoom meetings and/or face time). Health Coaching will: (1) Reduce existing Low Parental Health Literacy and Childhood Obesity, (2) Increase parental stress-coping, (3) Support improved knowledge of age appropriate child rearing practices, (4) support continued completion of developmental screenings and referrals. We will include a sample of Head Start and Non Head Start Programs.

Success Factors: 90-100% of participants will complete health coaching session as individuals 2 times and as a group 2 times across 4 weeks through online zoom meetings and phone calls. 90-100% of participants will complete paper and online surveys 90-100% of participants will receive technology support for parent/child development knowledge through an updated phone application for both android/ iphone access. 90-100% of participants will complete nutrition log, shared book reading and physical activity
Sent for Review the the Caplan Foundation and Waiting for Response by June 15 This Letter of Intent will be amended to be considered as an ethnographic study if we have the opportunity to apply for full research funding.
